As the oldest son of John and Mary Winchester, he's had to go through a few hardships. A lot of them involved becoming the soldier that his father wanted him to be. But in the end for him the supernatural wasn't something that was important. Taking care of his baby brother became his first priority. Even if being a kid should've come first.
